Fall 2016 Internship: Boston Community Gardens

Overview

The Boston Community Gardens Intern will play a key role in the day to day operations of one the Trustees most diverse selection of properties. The Boston Region includes a total of 60 special places; 56 Community Gardens 4 reservations. 

With 215,000 annual visitors, the Community Gardens portfolio has a huge impact on the profile of the Trustees in Boston.  The Gardens are living, growing refuges in otherwise built, urban neighborhoods. They are gathering spaces in their communities, providing people with access to fresh food and a direct connection to the earth. 

Commitment

This is a semester long internship, 10-15 hours per week, 12-16 weeks. While some work can be done remotely, ideally the intern would spend one day per week in the Boston Office located in downtown Boston. 

Responsibilities

General responsibilities may include the following:
•Communications and Outreach: develop a social media calendar and outreach strategy to promote events in different areas of Boston, post to social media, create the Boston Region’s monthly newsletter utilizing a template and content developed by staff, development of press releases
•Event Support: prepare workshop/event evaluation methods including developing a strategy for a high response rate, support program staff at seasonal events and the Agricultural Fair 
•Program Support: assist Engagement Site Manager in program development, outreach, execution, recruitment, and evaluation
•Stewardship: support stewardship staff with in garden projects, seedling sales, occasional planting, mulching, weeding
•Miscellaneous tasks: develop an accurate system for maintaining a gardener database, collecting and entering data from programs/events/classes, and cataloging photos
•Log internship hours into the Hands on Connect database weekly


Qualifications
•Interest in and understanding of community gardens, local food production/distribution preferred
•Self motivated and able to work independently
•Computer proficiency in applicable Microsoft or online software
•Organized and flexible
•Experience working with diverse audiences preferred
•Familiarity with software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe and Windows and social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter and Hootsuite 
•Physical abilities may require continuous standing, walking, bending, reaching, and carrying loads between 15-50 lbs.; occasional climbing, stooping, twisting and fine manipulation, and/or sitting at a computer for extended periods of time
