Opportunity Details
Promenade Garden Volunteer - SCHG
Opportunity Overview:
In the beautiful gardens of Stevens-Coolidge House & Gardens in North Andover, we are currently recruiting volunteers to help care for the Dogwood Promenade. This stunning section of the gardens contains a path lined by dogwood trees, carpeted by phlox and waves of spring bulbs in the spring. We need volunteers to support this garden's care by weeding throughout the growing season.
Volunteers will train with horticultural staff and then be able to work independently once they are comfortable. This is a great fit for beginners to gardening because the garden is a carpet of one plant, so it is easy to identify what doesn't belong. And for those who need a flexible schedule because volunteers will set the time of their shifts. Volunteers are needed April-October and volunteering will be weather dependent.
Reports to: Horticulturist
Time Commitment Needed:
We are looking for as much help as possible. Ideally, volunteers will commit to 3 hours a week and will volunteer April-November.
Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):
Identifying and removing weeds from the promenade garden. This work could also include edging, planting, and light mulching at certain points in the season under the supervision of the Horiticulturist
Adhere to The Trustees safety protocols and training
Log volunteer hours
Qualifications:
Able to commit to volunteering for at least 3 hours a week
No experience is needed, just a willingness to learn!
The majority of the time will be spent kneeling and bending over, and at the end of the session carrying weeds to a meeting place where we can then dispose of the weeds for them. Must be able to lift 25 lbs
Minimum age: 18 years old
Please note: A background check is required for this role
Benefits:
Supporting the care of a historic property and garden
Outdoor, hands-on volunteering that will make a big impact for the garden
Connecting and networking with like-minded staff, visitors and volunteers
