Opportunity Details
Opportunity Overview:
Join our staff and other volunteers as we continue to expand, amend, and improve the gardens at Long Hill. We are recruiting volunteers to help in the newly created garden and greenhouse spaces. Work will include seasonal fine gardening and general landscaping tasks such as deadheading, weeding, planting, cutbacks, propagation, edging, mulching, invasive plant removal, and much more! Gardening skills learned will be transferable to your own gardens! We’ll meet weekly, rain or shine, but the morning will be cancelled in the event of extreme weather.
Long Hill was owned and cared for by the Sedgwick family from 1916 to 1978. Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, an accomplished gardener and author of The Garden Month by Month, and her husband, noted author and editor of The Atlantic Monthly, summered here until Mabel passed away in 1937. After Mabel’s death, Ellery married Marjorie Russell Sedgwick, a rare plants specialist. The combined creative vision of these two women led to the design of Long Hill’s enchanting gardens, surrounded by more than 100 acres of woodland.
