Garlic Mustard Pull - World's End

Opportunity Overview:
Interested in ecology? Want to promote biodiversity on our properties and across Massachusetts? Combine your love of nature with service by helping The Trustees to curb the harmful spread of invasive species. This volunteer position requires removing invasive species, bagging them up, and placing them at the property entrance for pickup. Work is mostly independent with occasional opportunities to work with staff and other volunteers. This position is vital to helping The Trustees’ achieve their ecological stewardship goals. 

Reports to: Stewardship Manager

Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):
  • Assist with invasive species control at World’s End
  • Understand the ecology/biology of invasive species and be able to identify them in the field
  • Coordinate with staff around targeted populations and species.
  • Walk the property and remove invasive species such as pale swallowwort, Asiatic bittersweet, bush honeysuckle, and garlic mustard
  • Remove invasive species, primarily by hand pulling (combined with use of a hand-pick or dandelion weeder)
  • Place these weeded plants in a garbage bag and bring to the entrance for pickup
  • Report new populations or species observed
  • Adhere to The Trustees safety and COVID-19 protocols
  • Log volunteer hours in a timely fashion
Qualifications:
  • Interest in and an understanding of the need to control invasive plants
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently
  • Dress in appropriate field clothes and footwear for varying weather conditions: hot and dry, cold or wet, etc.
  • Observance of Trustees safety protocol
  • Plant identification skills
  • Age minimum: This role is open to ages 8+ but requires 1:1 supervision for children interested in participating. 
Time Commitment:
  • Wednesdays and Saturdays 9am-12pm from April 20th - May 29th
