Opportunity Overview:
The Trustees is looking for a bilingual volunteer to translate posters, flyers and educational materials into Portuguese. Depending on the interest of the volunteer, there may be the opportunity to co-lead tours and public programs on Trustees properties alongside a Trustees staff member, providing spoken translation, or eventually lead tours independently in Portuguese. As an ambassador to the Island’s Portuguese-speaking population, you will help us expand our outreach to the Brazilian community, make our place-based environmental education programs for schools more accessible to English language learners, and ensure that our programming reaches an audience that is representative of the Vineyard community as a whole.
Reports to: Islands Education Manager
Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):
- Translate written materials such as flyers, posters or educational materials into Portuguese
- Provide feedback and suggestions on what type of programming might be of interest to the Island’s Portuguese-speaking population
- Depending on the interest of the volunteer, there may be the opportunity to co-lead (or eventually lead) tours and public programs on Trustees properties
- Adhere to The Trustees safety and COVID-19 protocols
- Log volunteer hours
Qualifications:
- Must be fluent in English and Portuguese
- Translator Certification desired
- Must have reliable access to a computer, email and internet
- Excellent attention to detail
- An interest in natural or cultural history is a plus
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Training & Support:
This volunteer position reports to a Trustees staff member who will:
- Provide an introduction to The Trustees and our work on Martha’s Vineyard
- For volunteers interested in co-leading public programs, there will be the opportunity to shadow a staff member or walk through the program beforehand; we can also provide written training materials if needed
Time Commitment Needed:
We expect this role will only require an occasional time commitment, on an as-needed basis.
Opportunity Location:
Translation of written materials can occur remotely. For volunteers interested in public programs, work will occur outdoors on The Trustees’ properties across Martha’s Vineyard.
