Opportunity Overview:
Since 1991, The Trustees has provided free, place-based environmental education programs for island schools through our Claire Saltonstall Education Program. We are looking for a volunteer to assist with school field trips at various outdoor locations across the island. You will lead small groups of students and teach programs on coastal ecology, geology, local history or climate change. With this support, we will be able to expand our capacity to reach a greater number of students each year, and split large groups of students into smaller, more manageable sizes.

Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):
- Lead school field trips for students in grades K-12 on topics including coastal ecology, geology, local history and climate change
- Communicate effectively with Trustees staff, program participants, visitors and other volunteers
- Adhere to The Trustees safety and COVID-19 protocols
- Log volunteer hours
Qualifications:
- Experience working with children preferred
- Experience in a formal or non-formal educational setting preferred
- Interest or experience in areas such as coastal ecology, geology, local history, or climate change
- Bilingual skills (English/Portuguese) are a plus!
- Ability to lead programs outdoors on varied terrain
- Please note: All volunteers working with children must pass a criminal background check
Training & Support:
This volunteer position reports to a Trustees staff member who will:
- Provide an introduction to The Trustees and our work on Martha’s Vineyard
- There will be the opportunity to shadow a staff member or walk through a program before leading it on your own; we will also provide written lesson plans
Time Commitment Needed:
We anticipate opportunities to volunteer in this role will begin in the 2021-2022 school year. School field trips occur on weekdays, primarily in the spring and fall. We can work with volunteers to arrange a schedule that fits your needs.
Please note: The ideal candidate would be available for a 3 hour shift, flexible days, one time per week over the course of 6 months.
Opportunity Location:
School field trips take place outdoors at The Trustees’ Martha’s Vineyard properties including Long Point Wildlife Refuge, Menemsha Hills Reservation, Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, Wasque Reservation, Norton Point Beach, and Mytoi Garden.
