Greenhouse Team Member - Chestnut Hill Farm

Opportunity Overview:
Located in Southborough, Chestnut Hill Farm is a hidden gem that provides organic vegetables to the local community through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and farm stand. It is a growing endeavor with 250 members. The property is a happy and bustling gathering space for our community throughout the season and we would love to have you join us. As a non-profit and a Trustees property, the farm is also committed to a level of community engagement and education that goes beyond agriculture to include community building and support.
 
As a Greenhouse Team Member you will work alongside and learn from staff as you propagate seedlings and help maintain a clean greenhouse area. Many skills you learn will be transferable to your own home gardens.
 
This position will be held on Tuesdays 9:00 a.m. until 12 p.m. April-June. Option to continue as a Flower Team Member available July-September (please see Flower Team Member role for details). Come learn more about greenhouse growing as you work alongside our farm staff.

Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to the following):
Greenhouse tasks:
  • Assist with greenhouse duties including, but not limited to seeding, watering, repotting of seedlings, filling trays with soil, fertilizing and hardening plants off
  • Assist with cleaning up at the end of the day and organizing tools and equipment
  • Maintain hygienic greenhouse conditions in order to stifle the growth of weeds, pests, and plant disease within the greenhouse
  • Sign-up for your available days
 
Wear closed toe shoes at all times while working in the greenhouse. We also suggest that you wear long pants, however to do so is optional. Because the greenhouse can be very bright, we also suggest wearing a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Don’t forget your water bottle!

Qualifications:
  • Prior greenhouse and field experience is a plus, but not essential
  • Willingness to learn and enjoy hard work
  • Ability to walk on a variety of surfaces including grass, paved walkways, stairs
  • Ability to stand, kneel and bend
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Enthusiasm for farming and being outside in variable weather conditions
  • Enthusiasm for fast-paced, detail-oriented work
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must have legible handwriting and the ability to read a spreadsheet
  • Knowledge of horticulture is helpful, but not required
  • Minimum age: 16 years old
  • Please note: A background check is required for this role
Time Commitment:
We ask for a seasonal weekly commitment from April 4-June 27, Tuesday 9 a.m. -12 p.m. We accommodate for occasional vacations and time off—just let us know ahead of time.
