Opportunity Details

On-Site Tree Decorating - Fruitlands

Opportunity Overview:
Let’s deck the trails around Fruitlands and add some natural beauty to the wintry woods! We will be decorating a handful of trees throughout the trail system for visitors to search for and/or just to happen upon while hiking this winter. We are looking for volunteers who can come to the Fruitlands property and help set up the decorated tree displays on the trails. If you would also like to create ornaments for this event, please see the Remote Decoration Making volunteer opportunity.

Volunteers for this opportunity will sort and organize donated decorations, and then bring them out onto the trails, and decorate trees or areas identified ahead of time. There are two sessions available, and volunteers will participate individually or in teams of 2-3 in a safe, socially-distanced manner, to sort and hang the provided decorations. Enlist a friend or family member and sign up together!

Tree decorating dates:
  • Sunday, November 28, from 12pm to 3pm
  • Saturday, December 4, from 12pm to 3pm
Benefits:
  • Beautify the trails for visitors to Fruitlands; create a sense of wonder and delight.
  • Meet new people.
  • Enjoy a hike on the Fruitlands trails – with a purpose!
  • Access to future volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):
  • Help sort and organize donated decorations into themed collections, pack them up to be carried out on the trails.

  • Locate trees that will be identified and marked prior to the event.
  • Do any necessary light clearing/preparing of the tree or area prior to decorating.
  • Put your tree trimming skills to work! Hang provided ornaments on trees and create pleasing displays with the materials provided.
  • Bring a fun and creative spirit.
  • Follow Trustees' COVID-19 safety guidance by staying home if you are not feeling well, or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19 symptoms recently; wearing a mask indoors; maintaining social distance, wash hands or use hand sanitizer.
  • Please notify staff 24 hours prior to your volunteer shift if you will not be able to attend, allowing other volunteers the opportunity to participate.
  • Sign up for any of the dates available.
Qualifications:
  • Ability to walk roughly between 1-3 miles on mostly wooded, rolling trails. Keep in mind that the weather could be cold or snowy! Appropriate footwear and layers are essential.
  • Be able to carry a reasonably-sized bag or backpack with tree decorations, twine, scissors, etc.
  • A creative eye for arranging the decorations in a delightful way is helpful but not necessary!

More about Fruitlands
In 1843, Amos Bronson Alcott and Charles Lane turned a swath of Harvard farmland into a Transcendentalist experiment in subsistence farming and Emersonian self-reliance, named Fruitlands, which ultimately disbanded after only seven months. In 1914, Clara Endicott Sears opened the grounds to the public, establishing a museum in the property’s 1820s farmhouse. Now, the 210-acre landscape encompasses five collections first established by Sears: the original Fruitlands Farmhouse; the Shaker Museum, the first such museum in the country; the Native American Museum, celebrating the history of indigenous peoples; the Art Museum, with a variety of rotating exhibits, contemporary art, and showcasing a combined collection of more than 300 Hudson River School landscape paintings and 19th-century vernacular portraits; and the Wayside Visitor Center, a classroom, education, and exhibition space.
