Opportunity Overview:
The Trustees of Reservations is looking for enthusiastic persons to help protect and study salt marsh migrating and breeding birds at Stavros Reservation in Essex. The salt marshes of the Crane Estate, Old Town Hill and Stavros Reservation provide habitat for numerous migratory and breeding species year-round including rare and declining salt marsh species. Volunteers are needed to document species abundance and behavior during the breeding and migratory seasons to inform habitat restoration, management and protection. This data will also provide the means to communicate with visitors and other stakeholders about how salt marsh habitats are changing and success of restoration and management efforts. Volunteers will be part of The Trustees Coastal Volunteer Corps and can participate in the following responsibilities.

Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following):
- Survey and record all bird species using specific areas of marsh and record abundance (training will be provided for each site)
- Log volunteer hours
Qualifications:
Required:
- Experience identifying birds common to Massachusetts
- Desire to interact with visitors and educate them about the natural world when opportunities arise
- Ability to walk one mile or more
- Ability to record data on digital platforms (eBird)
Desired:
- Knowledge of general salt marsh ecology is helpful
- Binoculars or a Scope are helpful, but not required
Training & Support:
Bird Monitors report to the Coastal Ecologist who will provide training on the following:
- Marsh bird migration
- Marsh bird identification
- General salt marsh ecology
Learning Opportunities & Other Benefits

- Participation as Citizen Scientists in documenting threats to marsh birds and outcome of habitat restoration and management
- Free training on general salt marsh ecology, bird identification and behavior, climate change impacts to marsh birds and habitats

- Participation in a vibrant Coastal Volunteer Program that includes special volunteer events
Time Commitment Needed:
Weekly, biweekly, or monthly 30 minute visits per site for Salt Marsh Bird Surveys
