Garden Volunteer - Naumkeag

Opportunity Overview: 
The gardens at Naumkeag are calling! Be a part of our garden team and lend a helping hand in keeping the Afternoon Garden, Tree Peony Terrace, Rose Garden, Evergreen Garden, and Chinese Garden beautiful! If you have an interest in gardening, and you have a few hours to spare each week, we would love to have your help! Help maintain the gorgeous gardens of Naumkeag, learn from our excellent Horticulturist, and meet other volunteers that share your passion for gardening.

With its views of Monument Mountain, its stunning collection of gardens created by Joseph Choates’s daughter, Miss Mabel Choate, and Fletcher Steele over 30 years, its original artwork, and its shingle-style house, Naumkeag creates an unforgettable experience for visitors and volunteers. Come be a part of maintaining the garden creations of Mabel Choate and Fletcher Steele!

Reports to: Horticulturist and/or Engagement Manager

Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following): 
  • Maintain communication with staff supervisor
  • Work with staff to assess gardening needs
  • Weeding, deadheading, edging beds, pruning, planting, harvesting
  • Seasonal garden tasks such as raking and mulching
  • Adhere to The Trustees safety and Covid-19 protocols
  • Log volunteer hours weekly
Qualifications: 
  • An eagerness to participate in maintaining Naumkeag’s gardens
  • Ability to use hand tools
  • Ability to follow instructions and work on a team
  • Have appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor activity
  • Ability to bend and kneel helpful, but not required
  • Ability to walk on a variety of surfaces including grass or uneven surfaces and ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Minimum age: 18
  • Please note: a background check may be required for this role
Skill Level: Open to novice, intermediate and advanced gardeners 

Time Commitment Needed: Flexible schedules available. Must be able to commit to 2 hours, once per week.

Please Note: This is a weather dependent event, and will be cancelled in the event of extreme weather.
