At The Trustees, we offer a wide range of internships, across nearly every department, throughout our special places that include parks, gardens, farms, beaches, historic homes, campgrounds, inns, woodlands, and more. Internships stretch from coastal ecology to marketing, development, and education. With an internship at The Trustees, you can make a difference, learn essential skills and knowledge, and grow your professional opportunities for a successful future.  

Internship Positions
Your internship is a practical work experience linked to your chosen major or field of study. Students who intern can make important connections between classroom work and professional practice. Learning objectives, established with your supervisor, will guide you through your internship experience.  

Internships are available for spring, summer, and fall for college students, graduates, and career changers. Internships typically last between 12 to 16 weeks, with a minimum of 15 hours per week. Not all positions are available year-round. Internships are based on the needs of our work and the capacity of our supervisors. Internships can be project or processed based, utilizing your skills to match the needs of our programs. Internships are unpaid. All internships require a cover letter and resume. Accepted interns will complete a mid-year and end-of-year evaluation. Please see available internships below.

Appleton Farms Education Intern

Overview The Education Intern will work closely with Appleton education staff to advance the program and curriculum development of our farm field school programs, reaching local students from preschool through high school through farm-based school & education programs at the property. This internship provides the opportunity to gain skills and experience related to program development, marketing, planning, and implementation for school-aged children. We are seeking candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to early childhood education and an interest in local farming and seasonal cooking. Agricultural and culinary experience is desirable, but not required. We are looking for candidates who are eager to learn the nuances of working at a nonprofit organization and who are willing to take on the challenges of a start-up endeavor. Covid 19 * The Trustees & Appleton Farms practice all recommended CDC guidelines and regulations to ensure safe visitation and program participation during this pandemic. This opportunity has the option to assist with in-person programming, during which we will practice mask wearing, sanitation, hand washing, social distancing and other health & safety procedures. Should you be interested in a remote or non-contact volunteer role during this time, this can also be coordinated. * Reports to: Education Manager Commitment: 3 month minimum commitment, rolling start Minimum 15 hours per week, Appleton Farms is open 7 days per week. Some weekend availability is preferable. Responsibilities General responsibilities may include the following: Program Development & Implementation– Develop and deliver engaging, hands-on farm and environmental programming. Work with the Appleton education team to identify areas for growth across school, children’s and family programing, including partnership opportunities with local schools and other organizations, and help to develop pilot opportunities for testing new program concepts. Support large scale events and weekly programming. Marketing and Outreach – create information campaigns for concept programs, including flyers, signage, social media content, and other marketing materials. Program Support - work with staff on site in support of educational programs including inventory and supply management, signage, and program setup and breakdown when needed. Volunteer Management - coordinate with the Education Manager to identify education volunteer opportunities for educational farm programs. Log internship hours into the Hands on Connect database weekly. Qualifications Experience in early childhood education programming and/or college-level course work in environmental science, early childhood education, sustainable agriculture or other related fields Demonstrated interest in sustainability, conservation, food systems, start-up business experience, and/or the nonprofit sector; Comfortable working with animals and in a teaching kitchen Currently pursuing or have recently completed an undergraduate degree; Strong communication and customer service skills; Basic computer literacy and knowledge of Microsoft Office, knowledge of design software including Adobe systems is a plus; Highly organized and able to keep track of multiple projects simultaneously; Must be a self-starter and strong collaborator; Able to lift 40 lbs Willingness to undergo CORI/SORI background checks Ability to work some weekend days *This is an unpaid internship with a 3-month commitment offered on a rolling basis year-round with varying hours per week, with the potential to obtain college credit through your university. Marketing & Engagement Intern - Fruitlands Museum

Opportunity Overview: The Fruitlands Museum Marketing and Engagement Intern will focus on supporting Fruitlands Museum team on a broad spectrum of programming, digital marketing, public relations, and customer service responsibilities. They will work to support Fruitlands Director and Engagement staff in event development and promotion for a busy schedule of spring programming. This internship provides the opportunity to gain skills and experience related to marketing, event planning, office administration, and social media. We are seeking candidates who are eager to learn the nuances of working at a nonprofit organization and who are willing to take a self-starter, generalist approach to gaining marketing and engagement experience. While the position is unpaid, the intern will gain valuable experience, a letter of recommendation, and connections to local museum and industry leaders. Interns can attend Fruitlands events for free. Reports to: Engagement Manager Commitment: 3-month minimum commitment, rolling start Minimum 15 hours per week, based on a weekly schedule determined by the candidate’s availability. Internship: Natural Resource Management- West Management Unit

*We are currently recruiting for Summer and Fall 2020. Internship Overview: Further your studies and learning path at the same time that you assist the West Management Unit Superintendent with the varied job of managing eleven properties in the unit. A wide variety of special projects, research, and hands-on experience is possible, including property maintenance, volunteer management event outreach, photo documenting, social networking, photo and video management. Help people discover these special places and foster local land conservation efforts while you “learn by doing” to gain a deeper understanding of field operations at the cutting edge of land trust work. You will acquire marketable job skills for the natural resources field and complete measurably valuable projects. Responsibilities (may include but are not limited to the following): Typical responsibilities of the Intern will vary depending on current needs and the intern’s interests, skills, experience and abilities, but will be similar to tasks listed below. Visit properties with the Superintendent and assist with maintenance duties such as: Maintenance of property grounds, and onsite cultural, and natural resources Cleaning, painting, minor carpentry Trail maintenance, litter pickup, mowing paths, raking leaves, graffiti removal Literature re-stocking and educational materials development. Brush and invasive plant trimming, and control; Hazard tree felling and removal Weeding, planting, and watering Projects: sign installation, trail building, painting, carpentry, rockwork, etc. Organize and maintain tools and equipment in the storage area, shop, and in vehicles. Serve as a Property Ambassador: welcoming visitors, soliciting memberships, responding to visitor questions, promoting awareness of regulations. Physical Demands of the Position and Requirements: Must be able to handle the physical demands of the job, which includes a level of physical fitness adequate to enable them to, for example: Lift 80 lbs. to waist height and maintain 5 lbs. over shoulder height for 5 minutes; Work outdoors for 4-6 hours on their feet in a variety of weather conditions To safely handle shovels, rakes, pruners, handsaws, hammers and other tools Transportation to begin work at the office, shop and/or field location each day. Commitment to remain in regular communication with internship supervisor regarding scheduling, work planning and the like. A smartphone is not required, but is helpful.
